The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, recently convened a closed-door meeting with representatives from Nigeria's electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to discuss the establishment of proposed 24/7 Energy Zones aimed at ensuring reliable electricity supply across the country. This initiative is part of the Federal Government's broader commitment to enhance electricity delivery to Nigerians, particularly in high-demand areas.

During the meeting, Tegbe emphasized the importance of providing stable power to homes, businesses, and industries, particularly in regions such as the Lagos axis, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano, and Enugu-Port Harcourt. He acknowledged that the challenges facing the electricity sector extend beyond just generation and transmission, highlighting issues related to power distribution and consumption.

Tegbe stated that the proposed Energy Zones are designed to address these challenges by improving the efficiency of power delivery and unlocking the commercial and industrial demand for electricity. He noted that strengthening the revenue and collections of DisCos is crucial for the sustainability of the electricity supply chain.

In his remarks, the Minister reiterated the Federal Government's dedication to enhancing infrastructure in areas with high electricity demand. This infrastructure development is vital to ensure that electricity supply can keep up with the growing demand in Nigeria's expanding economy.

The meeting was attended by key leaders from various electricity distribution companies, including the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), Ikeja Electric, Eko Power Ltd., Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), and Sahara Energy Group. Their participation underscores the collaborative effort needed to tackle the ongoing power supply challenges in Nigeria.
