A delegation from Journalists for Human Rights (JHR), a Canadian non-profit organization, recently engaged with PUNCH Newspapers to explore potential collaborations aimed at enhancing human rights reporting in Nigeria. The discussions highlighted the importance of creating a supportive environment for journalists, emphasizing the need for safety and ethical standards in journalism.

During the meeting, Fidelis Mbah, the Country Representative of JHR, praised PUNCH for its commitment to journalistic ethics and its proactive approach to addressing the challenges faced by journalists in Nigeria. He noted that PUNCH's dedication to maintaining a safe working environment for its staff is commendable, stating that the organization does not assign reporters to potentially dangerous situations.

The dialogue also touched on the innovative use of technology in journalism. Dr. Yusuf Moshood, Deputy Digital Editor at PUNCH, discussed the newspaper's existing artificial intelligence policy, which guides its editorial decisions. He emphasized the role of AI in enhancing newsroom efficiency while ensuring that the core mission of reporting on public interest issues remains intact.

Murdoch Davis, a JHR volunteer and ambassador, shared insights from his experiences in Ghana and Sierra Leone, where he has worked to train journalists. He expressed a desire among seasoned journalists to remain engaged in the profession, stating, "We are trying to give back. We are trying to stay active. Those that retired from conventional employment, we like to just have an exchange of ideas."

PUNCH's Deputy Editor, Tana Aiyejina, reiterated the newspaper's commitment to journalists' safety, emphasizing that the organization prioritizes the well-being of its staff while pursuing critical stories. This commitment is particularly relevant in the context of Nigeria, where journalists often face significant risks in their line of work.

The meeting also featured discussions on PUNCH's advertising operations, led by Mary Stanley-Ubani, Head of Digital Advertising. She assured the delegation that commercial interests do not compromise the newspaper's editorial integrity, reinforcing PUNCH's role as a watchdog for government accountability.

JHR has recently begun establishing its presence in Nigeria, with its first activity taking place in November 2025. Mbah highlighted this as a significant step in the organization's mission to support and empower journalists in the country. The engagement with PUNCH marks an important milestone in fostering partnerships that aim to improve the standards of journalism in Nigeria, particularly in the area of human rights reporting.
