A significant downpour in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, has led to extensive flooding, affecting numerous neighborhoods and leaving many residents in distress. The rainfall, which persisted for over nine hours starting early Monday morning, submerged homes and streets, making it difficult for commuters to navigate the city.

Areas particularly hard hit include Achussa, New GRA, North Bank, and Wadata, among others. Many residents reported that floodwaters infiltrated their homes, damaging personal belongings and food supplies. Commuters faced challenges as they attempted to traverse flooded roads, with some vehicles becoming stranded in the rising waters.

Witnesses noted that the flooding was exacerbated by ongoing construction projects across the city. Agbo Benedict, a local resident, expressed concern over blocked drainage systems, which he believes contributed to the flooding. He called on Governor Hyacinth Alia to direct contractors to clear these blockages to restore proper drainage and prevent future occurrences.

Angela Ortyon, another affected resident, acknowledged that while some major drainage projects had been beneficial, the numerous construction activities in the city have likely worsened the flooding situation. She pointed out that construction companies have indiscriminately closed roads and drainage channels, further complicating the issue.

The Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has been alerted to the flooding situation, particularly in Achussa. Terna Ager, the agency's Information Officer, confirmed that reports of flooding have been received, although officials have yet to conduct a thorough assessment of the affected areas.

As the city grapples with the aftermath of the heavy rains, residents are left hoping for swift action from the government to address the drainage issues and mitigate the impact of future rainfall.
