In a significant ruling, the Federal High Court in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has sentenced nine individuals to 10 years in prison for their involvement in crude oil theft. The judgment was delivered by Justice Joy Ikpeme on September 14, following their conviction on two counts of conspiracy and tampering with an oil pipeline, violations of the Miscellaneous Offences Act.

Each of the nine defendants received a five-year sentence for conspiracy and an additional 10-year sentence for tampering with the oil pipeline. The court ordered that these sentences run concurrently, meaning they will serve a maximum of 10 years without the option of a fine.

The convictions stemmed from an intelligence-led operation conducted earlier this year by the Nigerian Navy and the Department of State Services, which resulted in the arrest of 19 individuals. The nine convicted were apprehended while stealing crude oil from an oil wellhead known as ASABO-D, located in the Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

A security source highlighted the importance of this ruling, noting it as part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Navy to tackle the rampant issue of crude oil theft and illegal bunkering in Nigeria's coastal and riverine regions. The source stated, "The conviction marks another milestone in the Navy's sustained campaign against crude oil theft and illegal bunkering activities along Nigeria's maritime and riverine areas, which have continued to drain the nation's oil revenue and damage the environment in host communities."

This ruling is expected to serve as a deterrent to others involved in similar illegal activities, as the government intensifies its crackdown on oil theft that has long plagued the nation’s economy and environmental health.
