In a significant move towards fostering an inclusive digital economy, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has partnered with CBM International Nigeria to enhance the participation of persons with disabilities in the digital sector. This initiative was highlighted during a recent two-day Digital Citizenship Training for Persons with Disabilities held in Lagos, which saw a robust turnout from individuals with disabilities, government representatives, and various stakeholders.

The training aimed to equip participants with essential digital skills, raise awareness about online safety, and provide tools necessary for meaningful engagement in Nigeria's expanding digital landscape. Themed "Empowering Persons with Disabilities Through Digital Citizenship for an Inclusive Digital Economy," the event underscored the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in digital transformation.

Ms. Helen Obi, the Director of the Digital Economy Department at NCC, represented the Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, and emphasized the need for Nigeria's digital transformation to be accessible and centered around the needs of all citizens. She pointed out that while digital technology is vital for communication, education, and access to services, persons with disabilities still encounter significant barriers. These include inaccessible digital products, high costs of devices and connectivity, and a lack of adequate digital skills.

Obi stated, "Digital inclusion must therefore encompass accessibility, affordability, digital skills, safety and meaningful use." She cited data from the World Health Organization, revealing that approximately 1.3 billion people worldwide experience significant disabilities, highlighting the urgency of addressing digital exclusion in achieving a truly inclusive economy.

The concept of digital citizenship, as explained by Obi, extends beyond merely operating devices; it includes the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the online world safely, protect personal information, and understand digital rights and responsibilities. She noted that technology has the potential to eliminate barriers faced by persons with disabilities, facilitating better access to education, employment, and public services through assistive technologies.

Michael Idah, the Country Programme Manager at CBM International Nigeria, reiterated the organization's commitment to promoting disability-inclusive development across sectors. He emphasized that while technical training is critical, the ultimate success will depend on translating these digital skills into systemic change, job opportunities, and accessible infrastructure.

Dr. Adekola Oluwafunmilayo, representing the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs, remarked that the collaboration with NCC is a pivotal step in enhancing digital skills and economic empowerment for persons with disabilities. She highlighted that developing these skills would significantly improve the economic independence and overall well-being of individuals with disabilities, many of whom operate unregistered businesses, limiting their access to financial opportunities.

In related news, the Federal Ministry of Education announced that 16,000 Nigerians have enrolled in its inaugural Digital Training Academy, a free initiative aimed at equipping young Nigerians with globally recognized digital skills. This program is part of the government's broader efforts to cultivate a skilled workforce capable of thriving in the global digital economy, complementing ongoing investments in digital skills development.
