In a significant move aimed at improving access to justice, the Chisco Group has donated two buses to the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ikoyi, Lagos. This donation is part of the celebrations for the 70th birthday of the company's founder, Chief Chidi Anyaegbu.

The newly donated buses, which can accommodate up to 100 individuals per trip, are intended to facilitate the transportation of awaiting-trial inmates to their court hearings. This initiative addresses a critical gap in the justice system, as many inmates have faced prolonged delays in their cases due to a lack of adequate transport.

Chief Anyaegbu emphasized the importance of ensuring that justice is accessible. "Justice cannot move efficiently when the people who require it cannot get to court. These buses are our contribution towards making the justice process more accessible and effective," he stated during the handover ceremony.

The Ikoyi facility currently houses over 3,000 awaiting-trial inmates, many of whom have seen their cases stalled for extended periods. The Nigerian Correctional Service has previously highlighted the shortage of court-transport vehicles as a key factor contributing to these delays. When inmates miss their court dates due to transport issues, it often results in adjournments, further prolonging their legal battles.

In addition to the bus donation, Chisco Group has also committed to providing automotive skills training for eligible inmates at the Ikoyi facility. This initiative, managed by Machine Nationwide Limited, a subsidiary of Chisco Group, aims to equip inmates with valuable skills that can aid their reintegration into society upon release. Chief Obinna Anyaegbu, managing director of Chisco Transport Limited, noted that the focus should extend beyond mere confinement to include the rehabilitation of inmates.

"Skills, dignity and legitimate economic opportunities are essential to reducing reoffending and helping individuals become productive members of society," he remarked.

The initiative has garnered support from family members, staff, and the Millennium Circle, a social-impact organization led by Chief Obinna Anyaegbu, along with friends and well-wishers from both Nigeria and abroad.

Chisco Group plans to monitor the performance of the buses over time, tracking key indicators such as the number of court trips completed, the number of inmates transported, and any reduction in missed court appearances linked to transport issues. This data will be compared against previous records to assess the impact of the donation on custodial congestion and overall justice delivery.

This donation not only highlights corporate social responsibility but also underscores the urgent need for systemic improvements in Nigeria's justice system, particularly for those awaiting trial. The Chisco Group's efforts could serve as a model for other organizations looking to make a positive impact in similar areas.
