In a bid to address the escalating tensions surrounding King’s College in Lagos, the Federal Government has assured staff that there will be no job losses or punitive actions as a result of the ongoing management dispute. This assurance was provided by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, following a high-level meeting with the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and other relevant stakeholders.

During the meeting, which took place on Monday, Alausa confirmed that the controversial management arrangement allowing the King’s College Old Boys Association to oversee certain aspects of the institution would proceed. He emphasized that the government is committed to dialogue and mutual respect in resolving the issues at hand, acknowledging that while stakeholders may not receive everything they requested, discussions are essential for finding common ground.

The TUC announced the suspension of its planned industrial action against the government, citing the positive outcome of the meeting. A seven-member committee has been established to further investigate the concerns raised by the unions. This committee will consist of representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the TUC, and the King’s College Old Boys Association, and is expected to complete its review within one to two weeks.

Alausa reassured all academic and non-academic staff at King’s College that they would continue to be treated in accordance with the Public Service Rules, stating, "No staff will be dismissed," and that there would be “no demonisation or punishment” for any staff member related to the current situation. This promise has been welcomed by the unions, who had previously expressed concerns over the management changes and the potential impact on their members.

TUC General Secretary, Comrade Nuhu Toro, described the meeting as “fruitful and robust,” highlighting that the unions' concerns were taken seriously. He noted that the newly formed committee would allow for further scrutiny of the management policy and provide a platform for the unions to voice their opinions before the parties reconvene.

Beyond the immediate labor issues, Toro also pointed out the urgent need for significant improvements to the physical infrastructure of King’s College, which has been described as deteriorating. He warned that the current state of the institution cannot continue and called for immediate interventions to restore its condition.

The Federal Government's approach to this crisis aligns with its broader agenda to enhance the management and physical state of public educational institutions across Nigeria.
