The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of a second corpse from the Mayfair Motor Park in Ile-Ife, escalating the death toll from a recent shooting incident to two. This development follows the tragic death of Olalekan Oyeyemi, a prominent chieftain of the Accord Party, who was fatally shot during a violent clash at the park on Sunday.

Oyeyemi, popularly known as ‘Emir Ajagungbade’, was buried on Monday at his newly completed residence in Agunbelewo, Osogbo, in accordance with traditional rites. Eyewitness accounts and social media footage depicted the moment he was found lying face down in a pool of blood inside a vehicle shortly after the incident.

The clash reportedly involved Oyeyemi and a faction led by another leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), identified only by the nickname Sibi. Following the incident, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke expressed his condolences and directed the state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

In light of the violence, Governor Adeleke has ordered the closure of the Mayfair Motor Park, which has remained non-operational since the incident. Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi stated that the case has been escalated to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiry. He urged individuals connected to the incident to report to the nearest police station instead of defending themselves on social media, assuring that all involved would face legal consequences.

The burial of Oyeyemi was attended by family members and traditional priests, while his associates were reportedly barred from entering the premises during the interment. Tensions escalated at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital prior to the burial, where associates of the deceased allegedly attacked hospital staff after realizing they were being filmed.

In a related development, the Osun State Commissioner for Transportation, Sesan Oyedele, addressed claims that he had convened a meeting to endorse Oyeyemi as the next state chairman of the NURTW. He clarified that leaders of various units had come to his house to discuss their support for Oyeyemi, but he had not initiated any formal endorsement. Oyedele emphasized that the individuals making allegations about the meeting were not present during the discussions regarding the NURTW chairmanship.

He urged the community to remain calm amid the unfolding crisis, assuring that efforts are underway to resolve the situation. The recent violence has raised concerns about the ongoing power struggles within the NURTW in Osun State, highlighting the need for peace and stability in the region.
