The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert for the upcoming week, predicting a mix of thunderstorms and high temperatures across various regions of the country. The three-day outlook, covering Monday through Wednesday, highlights the likelihood of strong winds preceding thunderstorms, particularly affecting southern states.

Starting on Monday, September 14, 2026, NiMet expects sunny weather in the northern regions, with some cloud cover and the possibility of isolated thunderstorms in Taraba State later in the day. The north-central area will experience a predominantly cloudy atmosphere with occasional sunshine.

In contrast, the southern states are forecasted to have cloudy conditions interspersed with sunshine. Thunderstorms and light rains are anticipated in Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states. Furthermore, moderate rains are expected to extend to Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Delta, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, and Anambra states later in the day.

On Tuesday, September 15, the weather will remain largely similar, with sunny skies and cloud patches in the north, while thunderstorms are likely to occur in Taraba State. Southern states, including Ondo, Osun, Ogun, Lagos, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, Edo, and Delta, will also see thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains.

By Wednesday, September 16, the northern and north-central regions are expected to experience sunny skies and cloud patches, while rain activity will be concentrated in Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers states, where thunderstorms with moderate rains are likely.

NiMet has urged residents in areas prone to thunderstorms to take necessary precautions. The agency advises the public to secure loose objects, refrain from driving during heavy rains, disconnect electrical appliances from sockets, and avoid standing under tall trees during storms. Airlines are also encouraged to check specific weather reports from NiMet before proceeding with flight operations.

The agency warns that high temperatures throughout this period may lead to thermal discomfort, emphasizing the importance of staying hydrated and taking care during the heat.
