In a significant move to bolster the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), President Bola Tinubu has allocated a property recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as the commission's new headquarters. This announcement was made by Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, during the commissioning ceremony held in Abuja.

The property was designated for the NDPC following the commission's request for a permanent office that reflects its expanding responsibilities and international stature. Tijani emphasized that this allocation is a prime example of utilizing recovered assets for the benefit of the Nigerian people. "An asset that is recovered on behalf of the Nigerian people has been returned to productive use for the protection of Nigerian people," he stated, highlighting the transformation of a property once associated with corruption into a facility dedicated to safeguarding citizens' data.

The NDPC has faced numerous challenges since its inception, including funding issues that hindered its ability to meet operational costs. However, President Tinubu's administration has provided direct financial support to ensure the commission could sustain its operations until it became self-sufficient. The establishment of the Nigeria Data Protection Act shortly after Tinubu took office in 2023 has further empowered the NDPC to protect the privacy and personal data of Nigerians.

Tijani also called for enhanced data protection measures as Nigeria's digital economy continues to grow, particularly with the increasing integration of artificial intelligence technologies. He noted that as more government services transition online and businesses leverage data for value creation, the importance of privacy and responsible data governance will escalate.

Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, revealed that the commission received approval for the new property from the EFCC in July 2025, with renovation work commencing in March 2026. He described the new headquarters as a remarkable advancement for an agency that started with limited resources and personnel. Initially, the NDPC began with just 12 employees in February 2022 and lacked dedicated funding, with Olatunji personally contributing to its early operations.

Since then, the NDPC has made notable strides, licensing 356 Data Protection Compliance Organisations (DPCOs) and generating over N12 billion in revenue within three years. The data protection sector has created more than 27,000 jobs, showcasing the agency's impact on the economy. Additionally, over 66,000 Nigerians have enrolled in the NDPC's virtual privacy academy, and the commission has conducted 220 training programs benefiting nearly 100,000 people.

The NDPC has also established partnerships with international organizations, signing 28 memoranda of understanding with data protection authorities from countries such as Canada, Morocco, and Ghana. The new headquarters, located in Mbora District, Abuja, features 56 office spaces, representing a significant upgrade from the NDPC's previous locations and reflecting its growth and commitment to institutional stability.

As the NDPC moves into this new facility, it aims to enhance its capacity to enforce compliance and protect the data rights of Nigerians, marking a new chapter in its mission to foster trust in the nation's digital economy.
