The Ogun State Police Command has successfully recovered a stolen 2016 Toyota Camry just hours after it was reported missing. The vehicle, owned by an Indian national residing in Ilupeju Industrial Estate, Lagos, was taken by his newly hired driver, Waidi Kolawale, who had only been on the job for two days.

The theft occurred on September 9, when Kolawale informed his employer that he was taking the car to a nearby vulcaniser for a tyre repair. Instead of returning, he fled with the vehicle, prompting the employer to alert the police.

Police spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, stated that the vehicle was tracked to a hotel in Ifo less than eight hours after the theft was reported. The police utilized electronic tracking technology, which led them to the area where the car was located. The Divisional Police Officer, CSP Olabisi Kamorudeen, coordinated the deployment of surveillance and anti-robbery operatives to recover the vehicle.

Upon arrival at the hotel, police found Kolawale had fled the scene with the ignition key. However, they arrested Monday Adetunji, an alleged accomplice, who was present at the location. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had previously attempted to solicit a mechanic to remove the vehicle's catalyst, but the mechanic refused to assist.

The police have secured the recovered vehicle and are actively working to apprehend Kolawale, who remains at large. CP Bode Ojajuni, the Commissioner of Police, praised the operatives for their prompt action and professionalism in handling the case. He also emphasized the importance of vehicle owners employing tracking devices and other anti-theft measures, such as steering and tyre locks, to safeguard their assets.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of vehicle theft in the region and the need for enhanced security measures by vehicle owners to deter such crimes.
