The President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Most Rev. Matthew Ndagoso, has called on Nigerians to reject the practice of vote-buying and selling as the nation prepares for the 2027 general elections. Speaking during the opening session of the second plenary meeting of the CBCN in Osogbo, Osun State, Ndagoso emphasized the importance of maintaining electoral integrity and ensuring that every vote counts.

Ndagoso, who also serves as the Archbishop of the Kaduna Catholic Diocese, highlighted the growing disenchantment among the populace regarding the electoral process, citing fears of manipulation that could undermine the legitimacy of the upcoming elections. He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to prioritize the conduct of free, fair, and credible elections, stating that such measures are essential for restoring public trust.

"Anything short of transparent, free, fair and credible elections in 2027 would be a serious disservice to our country," he remarked. He stressed that ensuring the availability of voters’ cards to all eligible citizens is crucial in facilitating a democratic process that accurately reflects the will of the people.

The CBCN President commended INEC for its recent successful management of the Osun State off-season elections, which received positive feedback from observers and analysts. Ndagoso expressed hope that this success would serve as a precursor to a more trustworthy electoral process in the 2027 elections.

In his address, Ndagoso encouraged all eligible voters to actively participate in the electoral process and to choose candidates based on informed conscience rather than succumbing to the temptations of political corruption. He praised the citizens of Osun State for their commitment to guarding their votes during the recent elections, stating, "What happened in Osun elections has given a glimmer of hope and confidence to many Nigerians."

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, who was represented by his deputy, Kola Adewusi, acknowledged the significant role of the Catholic Church in promoting peace and development across Nigeria. He praised the church for its contributions to education and health, urging it to continue its efforts in fostering electoral peace and encouraging prayers for the successful conduct of the upcoming elections.
