90-year-old Toshisuke Kanazawa wins bodybuilding title after birthday milestone
Toshisuke Kanazawa, a 90-year-old bodybuilder, wins a title just after his birthday.

In an inspiring display of resilience and determination, Toshisuke Kanazawa, a 90-year-old bodybuilder, clinched victory at the All Japan Masters Fitness Championships held in Hiroshima, Japan. This remarkable achievement came just one day after Kanazawa celebrated his 90th birthday on August 29, marking a significant milestone in his lifelong dedication to bodybuilding.
Kanazawa, who is recognized as Japan's oldest competitive bodybuilder, competed in the 85-and-over category against six other athletes. The annual event, which attracted approximately 200 competitors aged between 41 and 90, featured 13 different age brackets. Kanazawa's performance included a captivating one-minute free-posing routine that thrilled the audience, leading to his triumph and earning him what is reported to be his 17th Masters championship title.
His journey in the realm of bodybuilding began when he was just 20 years old, after initially making a name for himself as a competitive swimmer. Kanazawa achieved early success in the sport, winning the prestigious Mister Japan title twice at the ages of 24 and 27. However, he stepped back from competitive bodybuilding at 34 and remained away from the sport for 16 years. It was only at the age of 50 that he returned to rigorous training, motivated by a desire to encourage his wife, who faced health challenges.
Kanazawa’s commitment to fitness is reflected in his strict dietary regimen, which he has adhered to for decades. He follows a clean diet primarily consisting of brown rice, fermented soybeans (natto), eggs, and miso soup, having eliminated meat and fish from his meals long ago. His disciplined approach to health and fitness has played a crucial role in maintaining his competitive edge.
After his recent victory, Kanazawa shared his thoughts with reporters, stating, "Every year the wrinkles increase and my strength decreases. Overcoming that with effort is my way of living." This philosophy of perseverance and hard work continues to drive him as he remains focused on his training and aspirations to break world records.
In a heartfelt message on Instagram, Kanazawa expressed gratitude for the support he has received throughout his journey. He wrote, "Achieved my 17th national title! Thanks to everyone's support, I was able to secure my 17th championship victory, including 15 Japan Masters titles and 2 Japan Championship titles. Next, I am scheduled to compete in the Japan Championships on October 6th, so I appreciate your continued support. Thank you very much." His upcoming participation in the Japan Championships underscores his unwavering dedication to the sport, proving that age is merely a number when it comes to pursuing one's passion.
