The recent deaths of notable Nollywood figures from cancer have underscored the significant health care challenges facing cancer patients in Nigeria. Physician and public health advocate, Dr. Zainab Suleiman Buhari, has pointed out that these tragedies reflect a broader public health crisis affecting many Nigerians across various social strata.

Veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, known as Ogogo, actress Atinuke Remilekun Kareem, and producer Tope Osoba have all succumbed to the disease, prompting a renewed discussion about the difficulties cancer patients face in the country. Dr. Buhari emphasized that late diagnosis, exorbitant treatment costs, and limited access to specialized care are the main barriers confronting patients.

Many individuals delay seeking medical attention due to fear, stigma, or the high costs associated with treatment. In some cases, patients rely on alternative remedies or face delays in the healthcare system due to inadequate screening services and misdiagnosis. Dr. Buhari highlighted Osoba’s experience, where a breast lump was initially dismissed as a normal change related to childbearing, delaying her access to necessary tests.

The financial burden of cancer treatment is another critical issue. Kareem, before her death, publicly appealed for financial assistance, revealing that her family had spent considerable amounts on her treatment, and the support from the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) was insufficient. "My family has spent a lot of money… TAMPAN has tried too, but it’s not enough," she stated in a video.

Dr. Buhari noted that the costs associated with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, and other treatments can reach millions of naira, placing immense financial strain on families. Although the National Health Insurance Authority has expanded coverage for some cancer care aspects, many Nigerians still face substantial out-of-pocket expenses.

According to GLOBOCAN 2022, Nigeria faces an annual cancer burden of approximately 127,763 new cases and 79,542 deaths. Breast, cervical, prostate, and colorectal cancers are among the most prevalent forms affecting the population. Dr. Buhari stressed that the cancer burden extends beyond the entertainment industry, impacting countless ordinary Nigerians who often go unnoticed.

She urged the public to be vigilant about their health, emphasizing the importance of early detection and awareness. Common warning signs include persistent lumps, unexplained bleeding, and significant changes in health. Dr. Buhari called for a collective effort to improve cancer care, urging government investment in cancer infrastructure and the expansion of health insurance coverage.

Moreover, she highlighted the role of private organizations, NGOs, and the media in enhancing public education and awareness about cancer. Tackling the stigma associated with cancer is also crucial, as many still view it through a lens of superstition or fatalism.
