The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has achieved a significant victory in the recent local government elections in Anambra State, securing all 21 chairmanship seats and 326 councillorship positions. The results, announced by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) on August 30, 2026, indicate a sweeping triumph for the ruling party in the elections held on August 29.

Mrs. Chinelo Genevieve Osakwe, the chairperson of ANSIEC, declared the elections to be peaceful, transparent, and credible, emphasizing the commission's commitment to impartiality throughout the process. Voting in 20 out of the 21 local government areas was conducted using a straightforward 'Yes' or 'No' format, with results collated from polling units to local government levels. The only exception was Anambra East, where the APGA faced a challenge from the Young Progressive Party (YPP).

In Anambra East, APGA’s candidate, Ifeanyi Chinweze, won decisively with 50,169 votes, compared to the YPP candidate's 1,658 votes. This stark contrast in results highlights APGA's dominance in the elections.

Following the announcement, newly elected local government chairmen expressed their satisfaction with the electoral process. Ikechukwu Okeakpu, the Mayor-elect for Njikoka LGA, praised the elections as credible and transparent, vowing to support Governor Chukwuma Soludo's vision for a prosperous Anambra. Similarly, re-elected Mayor of Awka North LGA, ThankGod Chibuike Anago, commended the peaceful conduct of voters and the strengthening of grassroots democracy under Governor Soludo's leadership.

However, the YPP has raised serious concerns regarding the integrity of the electoral process, particularly in Anambra East. Charles Ifediorah, the party's Local Government Collation Agent, claimed that YPP members were barred from accessing voting materials, effectively boycotting the election. He reported that security agencies facilitated this compromised process, preventing YPP representatives from monitoring the distribution of electoral materials.

Ifediorah also alleged that gunfire was reported near the local government headquarters, which he described as an intimidation tactic against YPP supporters. He mentioned that one female party supporter, identified as Ijeoma, sustained injuries from the gunfire and required hospitalization. Despite these serious allegations, ANSIEC did not address the YPP's claims in its official election declaration.

As the dust settles on the Anambra local government elections, the contrasting narratives from APGA and YPP highlight the ongoing tensions in the state's political landscape, raising questions about the future of electoral integrity in the region.
