Amnesty International has called for an urgent investigation into remarks made by Sainna Buba, the Borno State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, who allegedly threatened political opponents and supporters of opposition parties in a viral video. The organization condemned the commissioner’s comments, in which he purportedly stated that individuals who did not support his political party would face punishment, including being "flogged."

The rights group described these statements, reportedly made on August 29, 2026, as unlawful and unacceptable within a democratic context. In a statement shared on its verified Facebook page, Amnesty International emphasized the need for authorities to take action against those who threaten political opponents, asserting that such behavior cannot be tolerated.

Amnesty International highlighted that the rights of Nigerians to freely choose and support political parties are enshrined in the Constitution, the Electoral Act, and international law. The organization characterized Buba’s remarks as “reckless and irresponsible,” warning that they could exacerbate political tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group stated, "In democracy, people are not punished for their political choices," urging political leaders to denounce any rhetoric that incites hatred or violence. They stressed that the upcoming elections should not be treated as a battleground and that those who support opposition parties should not be viewed as enemies.

This incident follows a similar situation involving Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo, the Chairman of Kuje Area Council, who was accused of making threats against opposition supporters, telling them to vote for the ruling APC or leave the community. Shekwolo later claimed that his comments had been misinterpreted.

Amnesty International’s call for action underscores the growing concern over political intimidation in Nigeria as the country approaches a critical election period. The organization urged Nigerian authorities to ensure that any potential impunity related to such threats is addressed through a credible investigation, reinforcing the importance of safeguarding democratic processes and the rights of all citizens to participate in the electoral system without fear of retribution.
