Football fans and players in Teesside have united in mourning the loss of two Cleveland Police officers, PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough, who tragically died in a road accident on August 22. The officers were involved in a head-on collision with a vehicle that was reportedly traveling the wrong way on the A66 near Middlesbrough.

The incident, which also claimed the lives of five individuals in the other vehicle, has sent shockwaves through the community. In a heartfelt display of solidarity, a minute’s applause was observed before Middlesbrough's Championship match against West Bromwich Albion at Riverside Stadium. The stadium screens featured images of the fallen officers as supporters and players paid their respects.

Tributes were not limited to the Championship match; a similar homage took place during a game between Seaton Carew FC and FC Hartlepool. PC Blades was particularly well-known in the local football scene, having served as a junior football coach at both clubs. His contributions to the community were fondly remembered by those who knew him.

Marcus Newing, a coach at Seaton Carew FC and a friend of PC Blades, described the past week as “horrendous,” but he expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from across the nation. He recalled PC Blades as a devoted father and husband, emphasizing his generous spirit and infectious smile. “He was giving to everybody, he was daft as a brush, the smile that would light up a room and he loved being around people,” Newing said.

Marty Hewitt, an ambassador for Seaton FC, noted that the tragedy had fostered a sense of unity among rival clubs. “Everyone just wants to put some time back and take a moment out and reflect on what Matty’s done and obviously for the life of Tom as well,” he stated.

Middlesbrough FC also paid tribute to the officers, recognizing their dedication and the vital role Cleveland Police play in safeguarding the community. On the evening of Friday, August 28, Hartlepool United held a two-minute silence before their National League match against Eastleigh to honor the fallen officers.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with authorities confirming that 24 individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. The five victims in the other vehicle have been identified as Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Jacob Matusiak, 23, Makai Saddington, 18, Theo Rae, 17, and Cole Robert Worthy, 17. The outpouring of tributes underscores the deep connections between the officers and the communities they served, highlighting the impact of their tragic loss on local residents and football fans alike.
