In a significant operation against wildlife trafficking, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has arrested three suspects and seized a range of endangered animals in Kano State. This operation took place on August 25, 2026, along the Kano-Daura Highway, following credible intelligence gathered by the NCS.

The intercepted consignment included a diverse array of wildlife, such as four chimpanzees, two baby gorillas, one caracal wild cat, and two albino alligators, among others. The full list of seized animals also features seven red patas monkeys, two galagos (bush babies), one honey badger, six rock fowls, one civet cat, and 19 greater bustards.

According to Tahir Balarabe, the spokesperson for the Kano/Jigawa Area Command, the operation was conducted in accordance with the Nigeria Customs Service Act of 2023 and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The suspects, along with the confiscated wildlife, have been handed over to the appropriate authorities for further legal action.

Assistant Comptroller of Customs Muhammad Zanna, who spoke on behalf of the Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Usman Adamu, noted that the operation was executed with professionalism. He revealed that the patrol team intercepted the suspects around 8:30 p.m. on the day of the operation. Zanna highlighted that the suspects attempted to bribe the officers during the interception, demonstrating the lengths to which traffickers will go to evade capture.

"This gallant effort has therefore disrupted this supply chain and will play a huge role in reducing the trafficking of endangered wildlife," Zanna stated. He expressed gratitude to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for his support in the fight against wildlife trafficking.

The Kano/Jigawa Area Command has reiterated its commitment to combating wildlife trafficking and protecting endangered species in Nigeria. The command has issued a warning to individuals and criminal networks involved in such illegal activities, emphasizing that the NCS will continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to safeguard Nigeria's biodiversity and ensure the survival of endangered species.

This operation reflects a growing awareness and proactive stance against wildlife trafficking in Nigeria, which poses a significant threat to the country’s rich biodiversity.
