Tinubu announces plans for reduced transportation fares starting October 2026
President Bola Tinubu reveals initiatives to lower transport costs nationwide, effective October 1, 2026.

Nigerians can expect a significant reduction in public transportation fares as President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to implement lower costs starting October 1, 2026. This initiative aims to ease the financial burden on commuters by passing on savings from the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles.
During a recent meeting with governors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized the need for collaboration between federal and state governments to ensure that the benefits of cheaper fuel are felt by the public. He noted that the rising costs of intra-state transportation have become a pressing issue for many Nigerians, directly impacting their daily lives.
To facilitate this, a joint committee has been established to oversee the implementation of measures that will lead to lower public transport fares. Tinubu highlighted that vehicles powered by CNG could save transport operators between 60 to 80 percent on fuel costs compared to traditional petrol-powered vehicles. He stated, "From October 1, our goal is that Nigerians begin to partake in those savings through lower transport fares."
Despite the government's push for CNG usage, transport fares have surged in recent months, with reports indicating increases of up to 200 percent in some areas. Tinubu's administration is determined to ensure that the savings from cheaper energy sources translate into reduced fares for commuters rather than merely enhancing profit margins for transport operators.
In addition to the fare reduction initiative, Tinubu announced plans to expand Nigeria's CNG infrastructure significantly. The government has ordered the establishment of 500 new CNG refuelling stations across the country, complementing an existing 500 stations previously planned. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to enhance access to cleaner and more affordable fuel, with over 120,000 vehicles already converted to CNG and more than 100,000 additional conversion kits on the way.
The president also mentioned that the government is financing over 100 gas projects, including 15 CNG mother stations and 86 daughter stations. These efforts are aimed at ensuring that all tiers of government work together to maximize the benefits of Nigeria's energy transition for its citizens.
As part of the government's commitment to improving transportation infrastructure, several CNG projects have already been commissioned in major cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Owerri. Tinubu reiterated the importance of cooperation among federal, state, and local governments to ensure that Nigerians ultimately benefit from these initiatives.
The announcement comes in the wake of increasing public concern over transportation costs, making this initiative a timely response to the economic pressures faced by many citizens. With these measures, the Tinubu administration hopes to provide much-needed relief to commuters across the nation.
