President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated his administration's dedication to modernizing the Federal Civil Service, aiming to transform it into a more efficient and results-driven institution. This commitment was expressed during a ceremony in Abuja marking the retirement of Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, the outgoing Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, who served for 34 years.

The event, which took place on Tuesday, featured the presentation of two memoirs authored by Walson-Jack: "I Planted: A Memoir of Purposeful Service" and "Beyond the Mandate: A Memoir on Leadership, Legacy & Labour of Public Service." These books highlight her extensive experience and contributions to Nigeria's public administration.

In his address, delivered by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, SAN, Tinubu praised Walson-Jack as a distinguished public servant who viewed her role in civil service as a national calling rather than a personal platform. He emphasized the crucial role of the Federal Civil Service in implementing government policies and programs, stating that the success of his administration relies on the effectiveness of this institution.

Tinubu underscored that his decision to run for the presidency was motivated by a vision of a better Nigeria, one that necessitates a competent and ethical civil service. He outlined his administration's plans for reform, which include enhancing institutional capacity, boosting the economy, improving security, and creating opportunities for the youth. The President's vision, encapsulated in the Renewed Hope Agenda, calls for a civil service that is professional, innovative, and focused on delivering tangible results for citizens.

Highlighting the importance of digital transformation, Tinubu mentioned the integration of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) with Human Resource Management Systems. This initiative aims to enhance payroll integrity, streamline human resource management, and promote accountability within the civil service.

The President encouraged the civil service to extend its reforms to the broader public sector, asserting that digitalization should be a hallmark of a modern Nigerian public service. He commended Walson-Jack for her efforts to make the Federal Civil Service more responsive and effective, noting her understanding of the need for continuous evolution in the face of changing national and global demands.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, who also spoke at the event, reflected on Walson-Jack's career as a testament to perseverance and integrity. He highlighted her journey from the Bayelsa State civil service to the pinnacle of the Federal Civil Service as an example of meritocracy in leadership. Jonathan urged the importance of integrity and merit in governance, drawing parallels with successful global leaders.

Other dignitaries, including the National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu and governors from Borno and Bayelsa states, paid tribute to Walson-Jack's significant contributions to public service. They emphasized the value of her experience and the lessons learned throughout her career.

In her remarks, Walson-Jack expressed gratitude for the opportunity to document her journey through her memoirs, aiming to inspire future generations of public servants. She chose to present her books at this significant milestone rather than hold a traditional retirement celebration, reflecting her commitment to the values of public service she has championed throughout her career.
