The ongoing dispute within the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has escalated, prompting the party's national secretariat to formally petition the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu. The petition, dated August 24, 2026, accuses Mr. Abayomi Hunye of falsely presenting himself as the governorship candidate for the party in the upcoming January 2027 elections.

In the document signed by Ayoola Peter Olajolo, Director of Administration for the APC, the party contends that Hunye has been unlawfully claiming to be its candidate, a statement they assert is misleading and detrimental to public order. The APC has already designated Senator Adeola Solomon Olamilekan as its legitimate candidate following a valid primary election.

The petition highlights that Hunye has been suspended from the party since April 2026 due to actions deemed harmful to the party's image and unity. This suspension was initiated by a complaint from his local ward, Tube Ward in Ipokia Local Government Area, which was subsequently ratified by the Ogun State Working Committee and communicated to the national headquarters.

The APC's petition urges the IGP to take immediate action against Hunye, including questioning him regarding his alleged impersonation and potential violations of the Electoral Act 2026. The party has expressed concerns that Hunye's actions could incite unrest and disrupt the electoral process in Ogun State.

Accompanying the petition are several documents, including a certified suspension letter and communications regarding the ratification of his suspension by the Ogun State Working Committee. The APC's leadership has emphasized the need for police intervention to prevent further misrepresentation and maintain peace in the state.

The petition states, "This claim is false, fraudulent and a deliberate act of impersonation designed to mislead the public and destabilise the peace of Ogun State." The APC has reiterated its commitment to cooperating with law enforcement during the investigation and has called for urgent measures to restrain Hunye from continuing his claims.

As the situation unfolds, the APC remains firm in its support for Senator Olamilekan as the recognized candidate, alongside Balogun Kudirat Abiodun as the deputy governorship candidate. The party's proactive approach in addressing this internal conflict highlights the increasing tensions as the elections approach, with the potential for significant implications for party unity and electoral integrity in Ogun State.
