Mohammed Danjuma Goje, the former governor of Gombe State and current senator representing Gombe Central, has publicly clarified that his decision to withdraw from the 2027 election was voluntary and not a result of pressure from Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya. In an interview with BBC Hausa on Tuesday, Goje addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary, which saw him lose the party's nomination.

Goje stated that he has come to a point in his political journey where he feels it is time to allow younger politicians to take the lead. "I have reached a stage in my political career where I believe I should step aside and allow younger politicians to take over," he remarked. He emphasized that he has already communicated this decision to his supporters in Gombe, affirming that he will not contest in the upcoming election.

Rejecting the notion that Governor Yahaya had any role in his political retirement, Goje attributed his decision to divine will. "It was not Inuwa Yahaya who retired me from politics. It was Allah who decided that I would not continue with this matter," he asserted. He expressed his acceptance of the outcome of the senatorial primary, viewing it as part of a larger plan.

Despite his withdrawal from the race, Goje mentioned that he could still return to the Senate if he chooses to run under a different political party and secures its ticket. He further clarified that he does not perceive his failure to obtain the APC nomination as a betrayal, stating, "As a Muslim, I know that everything comes from Allah. It is not about betrayal. In politics, I can only show gratitude."

Reflecting on his political career, Goje revealed that he had initially decided in 2019 not to seek another term in the Senate but was persuaded by supporters to reconsider. He noted that his recent decision was also influenced by similar encouragement, but ultimately, he felt that it was not meant to be. "Since Allah has decided that I will not contest, there is no cause for concern," he added.

Goje highlighted how his extensive experience in politics has shifted the nature of his electoral contests, noting that he now finds himself competing against younger politicians whom he has mentored. He remarked that the recent PDP candidate who won the senatorial contest is politically akin to a grandchild to him. Despite stepping back, he acknowledged the support he received from his followers after announcing his decision, indicating that he still possesses the ability to win an election if he chooses to run again in the future. However, he reiterated that his age and long service in public office make it fitting for him to pave the way for the next generation of leaders.
