A recent security operation in Anambra State has resulted in the deaths of six individuals suspected to be members of a secessionist group, alongside the loss of one security operative. The operation, which took place in Ogbaru Local Government Area, was executed by a collaborative team of security forces aiming to dismantle criminal networks within the region.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the operation was carried out on Saturday following credible intelligence regarding the location of the suspects. The joint team, comprising personnel from the Rapid Response Squad, Department of State Services, 302 Artillery Regiment, Nigerian Navy, and local community operatives, trekked for approximately four hours through challenging terrain and dense palm forests to reach the identified hideout.

Upon arrival, the operatives were met with gunfire from the suspects, leading to a prolonged exchange of gunfire. Ikenga reported that six suspected members of the armed group were neutralized during the encounter, while others managed to escape, some of whom were believed to have sustained injuries from gunfire. The security forces recovered two pump-action guns and various charms from the site, which was subsequently dismantled.

Tragically, the operation also resulted in the death of one security operative and left another injured due to an explosive device that detonated in the area. The injured operative is currently receiving medical treatment, as confirmed by Ikenga.

The Commissioner of Police for Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji, praised the bravery and professionalism displayed by the security personnel and community operatives involved in the operation. He emphasized the significance of intelligence sharing and inter-agency cooperation in combating violent criminal elements. Oji extended his condolences to the family and colleagues of the fallen operative while wishing a swift recovery for the injured.

In light of the operation, Oji reassured residents that the police command, in collaboration with other security agencies, would persist in conducting intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling criminal camps and recovering illegal arms. He urged the public to remain vigilant and to provide timely information to security agencies, highlighting the crucial role of community cooperation in maintaining peace and security in Anambra State.
