Senator Saliu Mustapha, who represents Kwara Central, has officially secured the senatorial ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) just hours after announcing his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC). The ticket was presented to him by Issa Bawa, the chairman of the PDP in Kwara State, on Friday, marking a significant shift in the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.

Mustapha's departure from the APC comes amid escalating tensions within the party in Kwara State. In his resignation letter, he expressed that his decision was made after extensive consultations with political stakeholders, supporters, and constituents. He emphasized that his political journey should reflect the interests and aspirations of the people he represents.

In his statement, Mustapha noted, "Where the path of a political platform no longer sufficiently aligns with these convictions and the aspirations of the people one represents, the honourable thing to do is to chart a new course." This sentiment reflects his commitment to prioritize the needs of his constituents above party allegiance.

Despite his departure from the APC, Mustapha extended gratitude to the party and its leaders, including President Bola Tinubu, for the experiences and relationships he developed during his time there. He reassured his supporters that his commitment to serving the people of Kwara Central would remain steadfast, regardless of his political affiliation.

His defection to the PDP had been anticipated due to his recent challenges within the APC, particularly after losing the party's governorship primary. There had been growing speculation that the PDP was reserving its Kwara Central senatorial ticket for him, which has now come to fruition.

As Mustapha embarks on this new political chapter, he aims to leverage his experience and connections to better serve his constituents and uphold his principles. His swift transition to the PDP underscores the dynamic nature of Nigerian politics, particularly as the 2027 elections approach.
