Akwa Ibom to Empower 110,000 Women Through Cooperative Societies in October
The Akwa Ibom State Government is set to launch a significant empowerment initiative for women across the state, targeting 110,000 beneficiaries.

The Akwa Ibom State Government has announced an ambitious plan to empower 110,000 women across its 31 Local Government Areas through cooperative societies, with the initiative scheduled to commence in October. Governor Umo Eno made this declaration during the launch of the Federal Government’s rural women empowerment initiative, held in Uyo, the state capital.
Governor Eno emphasized the importance of women’s empowerment as a critical aspect of social welfare and a key component of his administration's ARISE Agenda. He stated that the initiative aims to select at least 300 women from each ward in the state, thereby ensuring widespread participation in the program.
In his remarks, Eno commended the Federal Government for introducing the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) distribution program, which aims to benefit 27,000 households in Akwa Ibom. He noted that this empowerment initiative is designed to complement the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Initiative, which is already providing financial assistance to women in the state to help them start or expand their businesses.
The governor highlighted the broader implications of empowering women, stating, "Empowering women creates a multiplier effect that strengthens families, communities, and local economies." He reiterated that the program is not merely about distributing gas cylinders but is focused on improving lives, protecting the environment, and creating economic opportunities for households.
Furthermore, Eno pointed out that access to cleaner cooking gas would enable families to reduce energy costs, enhance health outcomes, and shield women and children from the hazards associated with traditional cooking fuels. He described gas as a catalyst for industrialization, job creation, and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises, which are vital for long-term economic prosperity.
The governor also encouraged investors to explore opportunities within the gas value chain, which includes LPG plants, cylinder manufacturing, gas storage facilities, and clean cooking solutions. He assured potential investors that his administration is committed to providing a conducive environment for business through transparent governance and infrastructure development.
Earlier at the event, Ekperikpe Ekpo, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), highlighted that the launch marked significant national interventions aimed at promoting women’s dignity and enterprise. He praised President Bola Tinubu for prioritizing women’s empowerment as a central theme in national development, linking it to the promotion of clean energy cooking.
As Akwa Ibom prepares for this empowerment initiative, the state government is optimistic that it will not only uplift women but also stimulate economic growth and community development across the region.
