The Federal Government is poised to establish Building Materials Manufacturing Hubs in each of Nigeria's six geopolitical zones. This initiative, announced by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, is designed to bolster local production, decrease construction costs, and enhance access to affordable housing across the country.

During the 56th Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Institute of Builders held in Abuja, Akume emphasized the government's commitment to strengthening domestic supply chains and supporting local manufacturing. He stated that the initiative is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which prioritizes expanding access to safe, durable, and affordable housing for all Nigerians.

Akume urged members of the Nigerian Institute of Builders to leverage their technical expertise and industry networks to contribute to the development and implementation of policies aimed at transforming the housing sector. He noted that housing transcends mere physical structures, emphasizing its role in ensuring safety, dignity, family stability, and improved quality of life for citizens.

In his address, Akume highlighted the critical issue of rising construction costs, which have made home ownership increasingly unattainable for many families. He called for enhanced collaboration among professionals in the built environment and suggested several strategies to mitigate these challenges, including the increased use of local materials, bulk procurement, and the adoption of modern construction methods.

The SGF also warned against the dangers of poor supervision and the use of substandard materials, stressing that such practices could jeopardize the integrity of buildings and endanger lives. He urged the institute to promote public awareness about the risks of quackery in the construction industry and to ensure that certified builders only endorse projects they have directly supervised.

Furthermore, Akume pointed out the ongoing infrastructure projects across the nation, noting that over 2,700 kilometers of highways and major roads are currently under various stages of construction, reconstruction, or rehabilitation. He mentioned significant projects such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road, encouraging builders to seize opportunities arising from these initiatives.
