Ogun State has officially declared Thursday, August 20, 2026, as a public holiday in celebration of Isese Day, a significant event dedicated to the Yoruba traditional religion and culture. This announcement follows a resolution passed by the Ogun State House of Assembly in 2023 and has been approved by Governor Dapo Abiodun.

The declaration was made by Kayode Akinmade, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the governor, who emphasized the administration's commitment to preserving Yoruba cultural identity and traditional values. Akinmade's statement highlighted the importance of Isese Day as a time for practitioners of the Yoruba faith to honor their ancestors and engage in traditional rites that reflect their spiritual beliefs.

The observance of Isese Day not only serves as a celebration for adherents of the Yoruba religion but also aims to foster a sense of community among residents. It provides an opportunity for the broader public to learn about and respect the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people. The Ogun State government has urged residents to celebrate peacefully, while also being considerate of the beliefs and practices of others.

Ogun State is now the second state in the southwest region to recognize Isese Day as a public holiday, following Lagos State, which declared a holiday for the same occasion. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos had previously announced that Wednesday, August 20, would be a work-free day to honor Isese Day, reinforcing the state's commitment to upholding the cultural values of its indigenous population.

The recognition of Isese Day as a public holiday in both Ogun and Lagos reflects a growing acknowledgment of the importance of cultural heritage in Nigeria. The Ogun State government has reiterated its dedication to promoting social cohesion through cultural observances, encouraging all residents to partake in the celebrations with respect and responsibility.

As the date approaches, the government has called for peaceful festivities, reminding citizens to remain mindful of the diverse beliefs within the community. This initiative not only honors Yoruba traditions but also strengthens the cultural fabric of the state and the nation at large.
