In a significant move to foster a peaceful electoral atmosphere, various political parties in Nigeria have signed a peace pact at the International Conference Centre in Abuja. This ceremony took place just one day before the official start of campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections, highlighting the urgency of ensuring a violence-free electoral process.

The signing event was attended by notable figures, including President Bola Tinubu, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume. The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, also added his signature to the agreement, alongside other key political leaders.

Among the signatories were presidential candidates from several parties, including Adewole Adebayo of the Social Democratic Party, as well as representatives from the Labour Party, African Democratic Congress, Democratic Leadership Alliance, National Democratic Party, National Rescue Movement, Youth Party, Young Progressives Party, and Zenith Labour Party. However, Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress, was notably absent from the ceremony.

The peace initiative is particularly crucial in Nigeria, a nation that has experienced election-related violence in the past. The agreement aims to mitigate political disagreements and prevent competition from escalating into conflict during the election period. With campaigns set to commence nationwide on Wednesday, political parties are preparing to engage with voters across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

This proactive approach by the political parties reflects a collective commitment to uphold democratic principles and ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted in a fair and peaceful manner. As the campaigns unfold, the emphasis on maintaining peace will be vital in fostering a conducive environment for voters and candidates alike.
