Dangote Refinery Offers Cheaper Petrol Prices Compared to Importers
Recent data reveals Dangote's petrol prices undercut import costs by N53 per litre.

In a significant development for Nigeria's fuel market, the Dangote Refinery has set its petrol price at N1,165 per litre, which is N53.54 less than the current spot landing cost for imported petrol, reported at N1,218.54 per litre. This information was highlighted in the latest Energy Bulletin from the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN), showcasing a growing advantage for locally refined fuel over imported alternatives.
As of August 13, the rising costs associated with importing petrol have been attributed to several factors, including fluctuations in global crude oil prices. In the same report, MEMAN noted that the average price of Brent crude was $85.45 per barrel, while Nigeria's Bonny Light crude traded at an average of $93.86 per barrel. The exchange rate for the naira, pegged at N1,362.53 per dollar, has also contributed to the increasing expenses faced by importers, making it more costly to source refined products from abroad.
The price advantage offered by Dangote Refinery is not limited to petrol. The refinery's pricing for Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, also reflects a competitive edge. While the spot import-parity price for diesel is reported at N1,649.52 per litre, Dangote's AGO price stands at N1,570 per litre, resulting in a N79.52 difference that favors local sourcing.
This price disparity suggests a potential shift in sourcing decisions among marketers and depot operators, who may increasingly turn to local suppliers like Dangote to mitigate costs. The implications of this trend could significantly impact the dynamics of Nigeria's fuel market, potentially leading to a reduction in reliance on imported fuel.
As the local refinery continues to offer lower prices, the competition may intensify, prompting other players in the market to adjust their pricing strategies. With the current economic climate and the pressures of international oil prices, the Dangote Refinery's pricing strategy could play a crucial role in shaping the future of fuel supply in Nigeria.
