Dr. Muda Yusuf, the Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE), has highlighted the necessity for urgent government action to improve living conditions for Nigerians, despite a recent decline in the country's inflation rate. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigeria's headline inflation fell to 14.53% in July from 15.91% in June, indicating a marginal improvement in macroeconomic stability.

Yusuf attributed this slight decrease in inflation largely to the relative stability of the exchange rate, which he noted is crucial given Nigeria's heavy reliance on imports. He explained that the stability and occasional appreciation of the exchange rate have positively influenced investor confidence and investment levels, which in turn have helped to lower inflation expectations.

However, Yusuf cautioned that the reduction in the inflation rate does not alleviate the ongoing high cost of living faced by many Nigerians. He pointed out that key factors such as food inflation, transportation costs, energy prices, and utility expenses continue to exert significant pressure on households.

"The ordinary citizen still continues to be very vulnerable, even with the deceleration or disinflation that we are recording," Yusuf stated. He emphasized that while the macroeconomic environment has shown signs of improvement, the structural issues affecting living costs remain unresolved.

To address these challenges, Yusuf called for comprehensive fiscal interventions from both federal and state governments. He stressed the importance of tackling the structural factors that contribute to high living costs, particularly in the areas of food, transportation, and energy.

Yusuf's remarks come at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with the impact of inflation on their daily lives. As the government seeks to stabilize the economy, the CPPE chief's insights underscore the urgent need for targeted policies that directly address the cost-of-living crisis affecting millions across the nation. Without these interventions, the benefits of any macroeconomic improvements may not be felt by the average citizen, leaving them vulnerable to ongoing economic pressures.
