In response to escalating security threats from the Lakurawa terrorist group, Major General Bemgba Koughna, the General Officer Commanding of the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, visited Kebbe Local Government Area in Sokoto State. This visit, which took place on August 17, was aimed at assessing the security situation following renewed attacks in the region, particularly on the Ungushi community.

The visit was announced by Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 8 Division and Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA. Major General Koughna conducted an operational assessment of the Forward Operating Base in Kebbe and engaged with local community leaders and residents to understand their concerns regarding safety and security.

During his visit, Koughna acknowledged the heightened security challenges along the Sokoto-Kebbi border, which have led to some residents fleeing their homes due to attacks and livestock rustling. He reassured the community that the Nigerian Army had adapted its security measures to enhance protection against terrorist infiltration. "Troops remain fully deployed, highly alert and operationally focused on protecting lives and property," he stated.

The General Officer Commanding emphasized the Army's commitment to swiftly addressing any emerging threats. He assured the residents that efforts were underway to prevent terrorist groups from establishing safe havens in the area. "We will continue to maintain a robust presence in this area and ensure that our troops remain ready to respond to any threat to the peace and security of the people," he added.

Koughna urged the community to remain calm and continue their daily activities, reinforcing that their security was a top priority. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between the military and local communities, particularly in the timely sharing of credible intelligence. "Community support remains a critical component in detecting, disrupting and dismantling terrorist networks before they can launch attacks," he noted.

The Army chief called on residents to report any suspicious activities or unfamiliar individuals, stressing that effective intelligence-sharing is vital for preventing attacks and restricting the movements of criminal elements. He reiterated the troops' dedication to protecting lives, property, and critical infrastructure in Kebbe and surrounding areas.

This operational assessment is part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Army to strengthen security in Kebbe and other vulnerable communities following recent incidents that have raised alarms about safety in the region. Major General Koughna's visit aims to restore confidence among residents and ensure that the military remains vigilant in safeguarding the community against terrorism.
