Lawyer urges Nigerians to challenge police bail fees amid new directives
Prominent lawyer Stan Alieke supports police reforms on bail procedures, urging public awareness.

In a significant move to combat extortion at police stations, the Nigerian Police Force has issued new directives aimed at ensuring that bail remains free of charge. CSP Anietie Iniedu, the police spokesperson, announced these measures, which include a ban on POS operators within 200 meters of police stations and a reminder for the public to be vigilant when signing bail forms.
Prominent lawyer Stan Alieke has voiced his support for these initiatives, emphasizing the importance of public awareness regarding legal rights. He urged Nigerians to be cautious and read bail forms thoroughly before signing, as many individuals often overlook the stipulation that no payment is required for bail.
CSP Iniedu highlighted that the police have established dedicated contact lines for citizens to report any officers who demand payment for bail. The numbers provided include 08057000001 and 08057000002 for direct calls, with an additional line, 08057000003, available for text messages, WhatsApp complaints, and voice notes. This initiative aims to empower citizens to report extortion and seek justice without fear.
Alieke pointed out that the lack of awareness about legal rights is a significant barrier for many Nigerians. He stated that if individuals are informed about their rights, they would be more inclined to challenge unlawful demands made by police officers. The lawyer encouraged the public to document any instances of extortion and to utilize the official complaint channels provided by the police.
The new directives from the Nigerian Police Force come at a time when the organization is striving to rebuild trust with the public, addressing long-standing issues related to the treatment of suspects and citizens at police stations. This reform is part of a broader effort to enhance the integrity of the police force and ensure that the rights of individuals are respected.
In a related development, Legit.ng reported that a Lagos State Magistrates' Court recently granted popular TikTok streamer Habeeb Hamzat, known as Peller, bail of ₦500,000 following his arraignment after an incident involving police officers. This case underscores the ongoing discussions around bail practices and the need for transparency within the legal system.
As the Nigerian Police Force continues to implement these reforms, the collaboration between legal practitioners and law enforcement could play a crucial role in fostering a more just and equitable system for all citizens.
