Airtel Africa, in collaboration with SpaceX's Starlink, has officially launched a revolutionary satellite-to-phone service in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This initiative, which began commercial operations on August 14, 2026, allows Airtel customers to connect directly to Starlink satellites using compatible smartphones, eliminating the need for traditional satellite dishes.

The new service is a significant advancement in mobile connectivity, particularly in the DRC, where conventional telecommunications infrastructure faces numerous challenges. With only about 30% of the population having internet access as of 2023, according to the International Telecommunication Union, this service aims to bridge the connectivity gap for those in remote areas.

Unlike traditional Starlink broadband, which requires users to purchase and install a satellite dish, the new offering utilizes specially equipped satellites that function like mobile towers in space. Customers can send SMS messages and access select light-data applications, such as WhatsApp, although full-speed internet and video streaming services are not yet available.

Airtel Africa's CEO, Sunil Taldar, hailed the launch as a pivotal moment for the company and its partnership with SpaceX. He emphasized that the combination of Airtel’s terrestrial network with Starlink’s satellite technology would significantly enhance connectivity in regions lacking conventional infrastructure. The service is currently available on compatible LTE Android smartphones, with plans to support Apple devices in the future.

To access the service, customers need an active Airtel DRC data bundle or must enable data roaming. Users can register through the MyAirtel application and enjoy free access during an introductory period of 30 days. However, Airtel has not yet disclosed pricing details for satellite connectivity beyond this trial phase.

The launch of this service is particularly crucial for various sectors operating in the DRC, including mining, agriculture, and humanitarian efforts. It offers a vital communication link for health workers and transport operators in remote locations, especially during emergencies or disruptions to terrestrial networks.

However, the service's reach may be limited by the requirement for customers to own compatible smartphones, raising concerns about affordability and digital literacy in poorer rural communities.

The journey to this launch has not been without obstacles. Initially, Congolese authorities prohibited Starlink terminals due to security concerns, particularly regarding potential misuse by armed groups. This stance changed in May 2025, when the Congolese Post and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority granted Starlink DRC SA a license to operate as a telecommunications provider, paving the way for this innovative service.

Airtel Africa and SpaceX announced their partnership to introduce direct-to-cell technology across 14 African markets in December 2025. Following successful tests in Kenya earlier this year, the DRC has now become the first market to transition from testing to commercial service. With approximately 650 satellites in orbit capable of supporting direct connections, the companies are optimistic about expanding this service to other African nations, contingent on regulatory approvals.

As the DRC embarks on this new era of mobile connectivity, the implications for the telecommunications landscape in Africa could be profound, potentially setting a precedent for how satellite technology can enhance communication in underserved regions.
