The Federal Government of Nigeria has set an ambitious goal to connect all riverine communities to telecommunications services by mid-2027. This announcement was made by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, during the Bini Riva Live festival held in Obighoro, Delta State, on Sunday.

Dr. Tijani, who was present at the festival celebrating the fifth coronation anniversary of the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, emphasized the importance of ensuring that underserved communities gain access to modern telecommunications. He stated that President Bola Tinubu has directed his ministry to prioritize connecting these areas, which have historically faced challenges in accessing such services.

As part of this initiative, the government is currently in the process of installing 3,700 telecommunications facilities across various rural communities nationwide. Obighoro-Ogheye has been identified as one of the key locations for this rollout. Dr. Tijani revealed that the formal launch of network installation in Obighoro-Ogheye is scheduled for October, marking a significant step towards achieving nationwide connectivity.

"It is important that we ensure that we connect every part of this country, including the riverine communities," Dr. Tijani stated. He expressed optimism that by mid-2027, these communities would not only be linked to the rest of Nigeria but also to the global network.

Highlighting the economic significance of riverine communities, the minister noted that improved telecommunications would unlock their economic potential. He remarked, "These are communities based in the area that is giving so much to our economy, and we believe there is no money expended on this infrastructure that is not justifiable."

The initiative is part of a broader strategy to leverage telecommunications infrastructure to bolster the national economy. Dr. Tijani reiterated the government's commitment to enhancing communication as a means to stimulate economic growth.

In addition to the telecommunications plans, the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, announced that the Bini Riva Live cultural festival would be included in the ministry's annual calendar. This move aims to promote the festival and attract both local and international tourists.

Musawa also encouraged residents of riverine communities to enhance their fishing activities and develop the industry to meet global standards, further contributing to the region's economic development.

Dr. Godwin Ebosa, the National Leader of Obighoro community, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government delegation for their focus on the socio-economic development of riverine areas. He assured the government of the community's continued support for initiatives aimed at improving the welfare and economic prospects of rural residents.
