The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its dedication to enhancing national security and engaging the Nigerian diaspora as a vital resource for the country's development. This commitment was articulated by Ambassador Sola Enikanolaye, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, during his address at the Nigerian Diaspora Economic Conference held in Toronto, Canada.

In his speech, Enikanolaye acknowledged the ongoing security challenges facing Nigeria, stating that the administration is making every effort to address these issues, which have persisted for over a decade. He emphasized that the government is focused on a multifaceted approach to security, aiming to create a safer environment for all Nigerians.

The minister highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships with international allies, particularly the United States. He mentioned his recent meetings in Washington, where discussions centered around achieving tangible outcomes in security, prosperity, defense, and the overall welfare of Nigerians. "Nigeria is entering a new era of partnership of strategic autonomy with key international partners," he noted.

Enikanolaye also addressed the role of the Nigerian diaspora, stating that under President Bola Tinubu's leadership, the government views Nigerians abroad as essential contributors to national progress rather than as burdens. He remarked, "For this government, Nigerians in the diaspora are critical assets of national development. We don’t see you as a basket case of consular burden responsibilities always in need of government’s intervention and assistance."

The minister called for unity among Nigerians, both at home and abroad, urging citizens to overcome divisions based on ethnicity, religion, and tribe. He pointed out the existing trust deficit among Nigerians and encouraged everyone to focus on cooperation that fosters production, development, and prosperity for the nation.

In his closing remarks, Enikanolaye expressed gratitude to the conference organizers and the diaspora community for their contributions to Nigeria's development. He acknowledged the role of Canada and other partners in building productive relationships based on mutual respect and cooperation, reiterating the government's commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders to advance Nigeria's interests.
