Kenneth Okonkwo, the campaign spokesperson for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate Atiku Abubakar, has called on both Christians and Muslims in Nigeria to reject any proposals for a same-faith presidential ticket in the upcoming 2027 elections. His remarks come in response to recent statements made by Islamic cleric Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, who expressed support for a Muslim-Muslim ticket under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Okonkwo emphasized that a same-faith ticket contradicts the principles of Nigeria's democracy and the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution. He highlighted that the Constitution explicitly discourages such arrangements, citing Sections 14(3), 42, and 15(2)(3)(d) as evidence of the need for inclusive representation.

In a statement, Okonkwo remarked, "The Same-Faith ticket is a no-no for Nigeria of today. It is against Sections 14(3), 42, and 15(2)(3)(d) of the 1999 Constitution." He further criticized Sheikh Jingir's comments, suggesting they promote religious dominance and marginalization of other faiths.

He stated, "With the recent comment by one Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir that he will repeat his support for a Muslim-Muslim ticket in 2027 to sustain the unconstitutional dominance and enslavement of others by people of his own faith, it has become imperative for all faithful Muslims and Christians to reject the Same-Faith ticket for the overall unity and sustenance of our democracy and our country."

Okonkwo pointed out that the presidency should reflect a partnership that transcends religious affiliations, asserting that both Muslims and Christians must be represented in the highest offices of the land. He urged citizens to prioritize national unity and democratic integrity over sectarian interests as Nigeria approaches the next general elections.

The call for a diverse leadership comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with various challenges, including ethnic and religious tensions.
