Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has called on students from tertiary institutions in the state to embrace values such as leadership, integrity, discipline, and excellence, which he believes are essential for building a prosperous New Abia. This appeal was made during the opening ceremony of the 2026 Abia State Tertiary Education Sports Fiesta and the launch of the New Abia Crusaders Club at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

Represented by his Deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, Otti underscored that the future of Abia hinges on the character and contributions of its youth. He stated, "The New Abia project is not limited to road construction, school renovation, healthcare improvement and infrastructure development, but is fundamentally about building people, restoring values, creating opportunities and raising a generation committed to excellence, integrity and service."

The governor described the sports fiesta as more than just a gathering of students; it is an opportunity to celebrate their energy, intellectual prowess, and creativity. Otti emphasized that his administration views education as a critical investment in the future of Abia, advocating for tertiary institutions to evolve into hubs of innovation, research, and entrepreneurship.

He expressed his commitment to producing graduates who are equipped not only with academic qualifications but also with the skills to solve problems and create jobs. "We are committed to producing graduates who will not only possess academic certificates but also become problem-solvers, innovators, employers of labour and responsible citizens capable of competing favourably anywhere in the world," he noted.

The New Abia Crusaders Club was introduced as a platform aimed at fostering leadership, responsible citizenship, and community service among students. Otti urged the club's leadership to implement mentorship programs, academic competitions, and community development initiatives that would positively impact society. "Leadership begins with the choices you make and the positive influence you exert in your communities. Invest in yourselves, uphold your values and become active participants in building the society you desire," he charged the students.

Otti reassured attendees that his administration would continue to prioritize youth in its development agenda through policies designed to enhance access to quality education, promote digital skills, and create job opportunities.

In her address, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Professor Uche Eme-Uche, characterized the New Abia Crusaders Club as an elite platform across various institutions to promote responsible leadership and positive citizenship. She highlighted the achievements of Otti's administration in the education sector, including infrastructural improvements and the resolution of salary arrears, which have enhanced the teaching and learning environment.

The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, also spoke about the importance of sports in youth development, noting that the Sports Fiesta was designed to help students discover their talents and explore career opportunities.

Professor Gabriel Okenwa, Founder and Pro-Chancellor of Lux Mundi University, praised Otti's visionary leadership, particularly in the areas of infrastructure and education. He emphasized that good governance should be acknowledged regardless of political affiliations.

Dr. Emeka Enyiazu, Chairman of the Central Organising Committee, stated that the fiesta aims to break down institutional barriers and provide a platform for showcasing talents across various educational institutions. The event concluded with the unveiling of the New Abia Crusaders Club, oaths administered to athletes, and a parade featuring representatives from different tertiary institutions. The fiesta was organized by the Ministries of Tertiary Education and Youth and Sports Development, highlighting the state's commitment to educational advancement and youth empowerment.
