The Catholic Diocese of Enugu has taken a firm stance against the unauthorized inclusion of Most Rev. Ernest Anezichukwu Obodo, the Auxiliary Bishop of Enugu, in the Enugu State All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council. In a statement released on October 30, 2026, the Diocese expressed its disapproval, stating that the bishop's name was added to the campaign list without his consent or knowledge.

Bishop Obodo, who also serves as the Enugu State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), was reportedly appointed as the Director of the Faith-Based Campaign Group within the APC campaign council. However, the Diocese has categorically denied any affiliation with the political party, emphasizing that the inclusion of the bishop’s name is a misrepresentation of his political stance.

In the disclaimer signed by Very Rev. Fr. Wilfred Chidi Agubuchie, the Diocesan Chancellor and Secretary, the Diocese condemned the act as a “malicious act of misrepresentation and defamation” that undermines the bishop’s integrity and reputation within the Church. The statement highlighted that the Catholic Church maintains a position of political neutrality and does not engage in partisan politics or endorse any political parties.

The Diocese reaffirmed its commitment to its spiritual mission, which focuses on promoting peace, justice, and the common good. While acknowledging that individual Christians have the right to participate in civic duties, the Diocese warned against the misuse of the Church's name and the identities of its ministers for political gain.

The statement further demanded the immediate removal of Bishop Obodo’s name, as well as those of other Catholic priests who were allegedly included without their consent, from the campaign council list and any related publications. The Diocese has also indicated that any further unauthorized use of the bishop’s name, title, or ecclesiastical office for political purposes would result in legal action.

The Catholic Diocese of Enugu’s firm response highlights the ongoing tension between religious institutions and political entities, as the Church seeks to maintain its integrity and uphold its mission in the face of political maneuvering. This incident serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between civic engagement and the spiritual responsibilities of religious leaders.
