Residents of Ekorinim 1 Housing Estate in Calabar, Cross River State, are expressing alarm over a series of robbery incidents that have plagued their community. This has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of security measures in place, particularly given the proximity of Governor Bassey Otu's residence, which is heavily guarded by armed policemen.

In recent weeks, multiple homes in the affluent neighborhood have been targeted by thieves, with reports of stolen valuables becoming increasingly common. Local residents are frustrated, noting that despite the visible security presence, their safety is not guaranteed. Governor Otu has been residing at his private home for nearly three years while his official residence, Peregrino Lodge, is undergoing renovations.

Madam Winifred Omini, a resident of the estate, shared her concerns, stating, "Last week, robbers attacked two houses behind this street and stole valuables. They constantly break into houses in this neighbourhood." Omini highlighted a disconnect between the heavy police presence around the governor's residence and the vulnerability of other parts of the estate. "People assume that because the governor lives here and there are many policemen around, security problems should not occur. But that is not the situation. Security is 75 per cent," she lamented.

Another resident, Martin Robert, corroborated Omini's claims, revealing that his neighbor's apartment was recently burgled. "It's true. Recently, they robbed my neighbour's apartment and carted away his air conditioner and freezer," he said, further emphasizing the growing unease among residents.

The situation has prompted shop owners, tricycle operators, and passersby to voice their concerns about safety in the area. They argue that while the governor's immediate surroundings are well-protected, the rest of the estate remains at risk.

In response to the complaints, the Police Public Relations Officer in Cross River State, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, questioned whether the robbery incidents had been formally reported to the police. "Was there really any report made to the station, or any recent incidents?" he asked, indicating that the police may not be fully aware of the extent of the problem.

As residents continue to grapple with the fear of robbery, the effectiveness of the current security arrangements remains a pressing concern. The community is calling for a reassessment of security measures to ensure the safety of all residents, not just those living near the governor's residence.
