Flutterwave, a prominent payments technology firm in Africa, recently participated in a high-level investor forum in Beijing, where discussions centered on Nigeria's economic potential and investment opportunities. The event, co-hosted by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and ICBC Standard Bank on October 22, 2026, featured Flutterwave's Founder and CEO, Olugbenga "GB" Agboola, who spoke on the significance of foreign exchange predictability and local-currency settlement in boosting bilateral trade.

Agboola underscored the transformative changes in Nigeria's economic landscape, particularly following the country's removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list. He noted that improved foreign exchange stability and growing foreign reserves are pivotal in restoring institutional confidence, thereby opening doors for African businesses to engage more effectively with global partners.

"A few years ago, if you were a Nigerian enterprise engaging the global financial system, the moment counterparties saw grey-list flags, currency volatility, and depleted reserves, conversations stalled before they began. Today, that reality has completely shifted," Agboola stated. He credited the efforts of CBN Governor Cardoso and his team for their strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing Nigeria's external reserve buffers and ensuring compliance to exit the grey list, which has significantly improved the country's macroeconomic environment.

The forum, themed 'Deepening Cooperation for a Shared Future,' attracted various stakeholders, including Chinese financial institutions, development finance organizations, and multinational corporations. This engagement is part of a broader strategy by the CBN to strengthen Nigeria-China economic ties, which are crucial for long-term investments and trade growth.

The CBN highlighted the importance of confidence and robust financial infrastructure in fostering these economic relationships. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the bank emphasized that stronger ties between Nigeria and China hinge on the partnerships necessary to support sustainable investment.

The panel discussion, moderated by Peter Poon from ICBC Standard Bank, included notable figures such as Dr. Okey Umeano from the CBN, Kayode Solola from Standard Bank Group, and representatives from the China-Africa Fund for Industrial Cooperation and Huawei. Their collective insights aimed to explore the potential of Nigeria as a viable partner in the global financial landscape.

Flutterwave's participation in the forum was further solidified by the presence of Mobolaji Bammeke, the company's Chief Compliance Officer, and Guo Songmei, the newly appointed Regional Vice President of Sales and Partnership for Greater China and Asia Region. Their roles emphasize Flutterwave's commitment to compliance, risk management, and governance in international payment systems.

With Flutterwave's transaction value between Asia and Africa nearing $1 billion in the first half of 2025, the company continues to enhance its payment infrastructure, facilitating trade across more than 30 African markets. This growth not only highlights the potential for increased commerce between the continents but also positions Flutterwave as a key player in bridging global liquidity with African markets.
