In response to a confirmed case of Ebola in Abuja, the Lagos State Government has significantly intensified its preparedness efforts to safeguard residents against the potential spread of the virus. Health Commissioner Akin Abayomi has assured the public that the state is on high alert and prioritizing its response to this health threat.

Lagos, being a major transit hub with frequent travel between the Federal Capital Territory and the state, is treating this situation with utmost seriousness. Abayomi emphasized the importance of proactive measures, stating, "Lagos is a gateway city with constant movement to and from Abuja, and we are treating this as a priority."

The state’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has been activated to implement comprehensive measures that include disease surveillance, isolation protocols, laboratory testing, and infection prevention and control. Response teams are currently conducting simulation exercises to ensure that healthcare personnel are well-prepared to handle any potential cases effectively.

To further bolster its response capabilities, Lagos has upgraded its isolation centre and is working on expanding its capacity. Training sessions focused on infection prevention and control are ongoing for healthcare workers across both public and private medical facilities. Abayomi highlighted the establishment of a streamlined laboratory testing process that is designed to deliver results within 24 hours, enhancing the state's ability to respond swiftly to suspected cases.

Additionally, screening procedures at airports and other entry points are being strengthened in collaboration with federal authorities. The state is also enhancing its digital disease surveillance systems to facilitate timely detection of suspected cases, contact tracing, and rapid response efforts.

As part of the preventive measures, Abayomi urged residents to practice regular handwashing and to avoid contact with the bodily fluids of individuals who are ill. He advised anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, weakness, vomiting, diarrhoea, or unexplained bleeding to refrain from self-medication and to seek medical guidance before visiting healthcare facilities.

"If you develop fever, weakness, vomiting, diarrhoea, or unexplained bleeding, or think you have been exposed, do not self-medicate. Call before visiting a health facility," he stated, emphasizing the need for caution.

Healthcare workers have also been reminded to remain vigilant, to inquire about patients' travel histories, and to use appropriate personal protective equipment when dealing with suspected cases. Residents who suspect they may have been exposed to the virus are encouraged to contact emergency numbers 112 or 767, or reach out to the Directorate of Epidemiology, Biosecurity, and Global Health at 0802 316 9485.

In light of the situation, Abayomi urged the public to remain calm, exercise caution, and rely on official communications from the Lagos State Ministry of Health for accurate information regarding the Ebola scare.
