The Edo State Government has reiterated its dedication to the welfare of electricity workers and the interests of consumers amid an ongoing industrial dispute with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC). This commitment was emphasized by the state Commissioner for Power, Paul Usenbo, during a statement released in Benin on Thursday.

The dispute, which involves the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), escalated to a conciliation meeting held on October 21, 2026, under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment in Abuja. Usenbo acknowledged the critical issues discussed during the meeting, including overdue overtime payments, staff promotions, personal protective equipment, and salary harmonization.

In a bid to address these issues, the meeting resulted in immediate resolutions, notably the restoration of overtime payments for workers. Furthermore, a three-week timeline was established for BEDC management to engage with the unions and resolve the remaining concerns. However, it was noted that the industrial action would continue in Edo State, highlighting the unique challenges faced by workers in the region.

Usenbo pointed out that the state Commissioner for Labour and Employment, Godwin Esheshie, is currently in Abuja, actively participating in discussions aimed at resolving these labor-related issues. The Ministry of Power has pledged to collaborate with relevant authorities, labor unions, and stakeholders in the electricity sector to foster industrial harmony and safeguard public interests.

The Commissioner stressed the importance of electricity workers in maintaining an effective power sector, stating, "Their welfare, safety, and professional development must remain important considerations in building a functional and sustainable electricity market."

He also urged all parties involved to engage constructively and exercise restraint, emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution that minimizes disruptions to residents, businesses, and essential services across Edo State.

Governor Monday Okpebholo's administration has committed to finding practical solutions that will not only advance reforms in the electricity sector but also encourage investment and enhance service delivery. The Ministry assured the people of Edo State that it would continue to work diligently with all stakeholders to resolve outstanding issues, ultimately benefiting both workers and consumers in the power sector.

The industrial action has already caused significant disruptions, leaving Edo, Delta, Ekiti, and Ondo states without electricity after workers shut down BEDC facilities on Monday due to claims of unpaid allowances. The ongoing negotiations and efforts by the Edo State Government aim to restore normalcy and ensure that the rights and welfare of electricity workers are upheld while also protecting consumer interests.
