The House of Representatives has taken decisive action following a devastating petrol tanker explosion in Edo State, urging the Federal Government to provide immediate relief and rehabilitation support for affected victims. The explosion, which occurred on October 15, 2026, near Oluku Market in Ovia North-East Local Government Area, resulted in significant loss of life, injuries, and extensive property damage.

During a plenary session, the House adopted a motion of urgent public importance, moved by Omosede Igbinedion, a representative from Edo State. The incident began when a fuel tanker lost control and overturned, spilling petrol that ignited and spread to nearby shops and stalls. Despite warnings, many residents gathered to scoop the spilled fuel, leading to the catastrophic fire that destroyed numerous businesses and vehicles.

Igbinedion expressed deep concern over the tragedy, highlighting the severe impact on local traders and their families. "The House notes with sadness the petrol tanker explosion and fire outbreak at Oluku, which caused loss of lives, serious injuries, extensive property damage, and the displacement of traders," she stated. The explosion not only claimed lives but also left many victims facing financial ruin, losing their savings and livelihoods.

In response to the scale of the disaster, the House has called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to assess the damage and provide necessary relief materials and financial assistance to the victims. They also urged the Federal Government to collaborate with the Edo State Government in rebuilding the affected market and facilitating the recovery of disrupted businesses.

The lawmakers further emphasized the need for urgent rehabilitation of hazardous sections of the Benin-Lagos Expressway, particularly around Oluku, to prevent similar incidents in the future. They directed the Federal Road Safety Corps and other relevant agencies to investigate the circumstances of the accident, including the fuel spillage and subsequent fire, and recommend measures to enhance safety along major highways.

The incident has raised serious concerns about road safety, especially regarding the transportation of petroleum products through densely populated areas. Igbinedion commended Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his prompt visit to the scene and commitment to support affected traders. However, she stressed that federal intervention is crucial to complement state efforts and provide immediate relief to those impacted.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with the practice of scooping fuel from overturned tankers, which poses significant risks of fire and explosion. It underscores the urgent need for public awareness campaigns and strict enforcement of safety regulations to protect communities living near major transport routes.
