The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed a case of Ebola in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, prompting immediate action to prevent further spread of the virus. The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, announced the confirmation on Tuesday, detailing that the infected individual is a woman who recently arrived from Uganda via an international flight. She was admitted to a private hospital in Abuja, where she was treated for several days before the diagnosis was confirmed.

Currently, the woman is in isolation and receiving appropriate medical care. In response to the confirmed case, health authorities have identified 44 contacts linked to the patient, which include healthcare workers, caregivers, and fellow passengers from her flight. Public health teams are actively working to monitor these individuals and any others who may have been exposed to the virus.

The government has intensified surveillance measures and has urged both public and private health facilities to remain vigilant. They are advised to promptly identify and isolate any suspected cases, enforce strict infection prevention protocols, and report potential infections to health authorities without delay. Prof. Pate has also called on individuals contacted by public health officials, particularly those who traveled with the infected woman, to fully cooperate with the tracing efforts.

In light of this outbreak, the Federal Government has reassured Nigerians to stay calm and adhere to basic hygiene practices. Citizens are encouraged to regularly wash their hands and avoid contact with the blood or bodily fluids of anyone suspected of having Ebola. The World Health Organization (WHO) has provided guidelines on how the virus spreads, emphasizing that transmission occurs through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, and that individuals cannot transmit the virus until they show symptoms.

Ebola can also spread through contaminated surfaces and objects, as well as through contact with infected animals. The WHO advises against handling or consuming raw meat from wild animals, particularly those known to carry the virus, such as fruit bats.

The WHO outlines several precautions that Nigerians should take to reduce the risk of infection. These include avoiding close contact with anyone suspected of having Ebola, ensuring that suspected cases are isolated in designated facilities, and maintaining good hygiene practices. Healthcare workers are especially urged to use personal protective equipment when caring for patients suspected of having the virus.

Symptoms of Ebola can appear anywhere from two to 21 days after exposure, with early signs including fever, fatigue, and muscle pain, which can escalate to more severe symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea. The WHO warns that Ebola symptoms can resemble those of other illnesses, making early diagnosis challenging.

Contact tracing is a critical component of managing the outbreak, as it helps identify individuals who may have been exposed to the virus and allows for timely medical care if symptoms develop. The WHO recommends monitoring the health of these contacts for up to 21 days, which is the maximum known incubation period for the virus.

Nigerians who suspect they may have been exposed to the virus are encouraged to cooperate with health officials and provide accurate information. The Federal Government has also established a toll-free call center at 6232 for reporting suspected cases and obtaining further information. Prompt reporting and adherence to health guidelines are essential in limiting the spread of Ebola in Nigeria.
