Houthi missile strike on Yemeni military camp claims 73 lives in Shabwa
A deadly missile attack by Houthi forces on a Yemeni military camp has left 73 dead and over 200 injured.

In a tragic escalation of violence in Yemen, local authorities have confirmed that the death toll from a Houthi missile strike on a military camp in Shabwa province has risen to 73. The attack, which occurred on Monday, marks one of the deadliest incidents in recent weeks amid ongoing conflict between the Iran-backed Houthi rebels and Yemen's internationally recognized government, supported by Saudi Arabia.
The assault targeted a training facility for internal security forces, which was housing new recruits at the time. Initial reports had indicated that 53 individuals lost their lives, but as search and recovery operations continued, the number of confirmed fatalities increased significantly. Additionally, more than 200 others sustained injuries during the attack.
Majed al-Nuzaili, a spokesperson for the Yemeni armed forces, reported that the Houthis launched three ballistic missiles at the camp, which is known as Al-Alam, located in an area critical for Yemen’s oil and gas production. The Houthi military spokesman, Yahya Saree, later acknowledged the group's involvement, asserting that the strike was aimed at what they termed "Saudi enemy gatherings."
Shabwa province is strategically important, housing major oil and gas fields, including the Balhaf liquefied natural gas terminal, Yemen's largest energy facility. The ongoing conflict has raised concerns about the potential for further military offensives, particularly following the recent fall of Mokha, a vital Red Sea port city to Houthi forces.
As the violence escalates, local authorities continue to search for 14 individuals who remain unaccounted for, raising fears of an even higher death toll. The situation in Yemen remains dire, with humanitarian needs growing as conflict disrupts daily life and livelihoods across the country.
The attack underscores the fragility of the situation in Yemen, where a years-long truce has collapsed, leading to renewed hostilities and a worsening humanitarian crisis. The international community has called for renewed efforts to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict, but the path forward remains uncertain as both sides remain entrenched in their positions.
