The prices of garri, a staple food in many Nigerian households, have witnessed a significant decline as of October 2026. The average price of white garri has dropped from N1,489.58 in January to N1,277.78, marking a decrease of 14.2%. Meanwhile, yellow garri has experienced an even steeper reduction, falling from N1,824.31 to N1,366.67, which represents a 25.1% decline.

Data indicates that both varieties of garri reached their lowest monthly averages earlier in the year, specifically in May or June, before experiencing fluctuations in price. Notably, the prices have remained stable in October, showing no change from September.

The monthly average prices reveal a pattern of decline followed by fluctuations for both types of garri. White garri saw a consistent decrease from January through May, hitting its lowest average of N1,091.67 in May. However, prices rebounded in June to N1,261.11 before rising again in July to N1,345.69. In August, the price dipped slightly to N1,288.89 and continued to decrease to N1,277.78 in September, maintaining that figure into October.

Yellow garri followed a similar trend, with prices falling from N1,824.31 in January to N1,356.25 in May. After a brief rise to N1,495 in June, prices fell again to N1,471.39 in July and further down to N1,406.94 in August. The price settled at N1,366.67 in September, remaining unchanged in October.

A closer look at the figures shows that yellow garri has consistently been more expensive than white garri throughout the year, despite the larger percentage decrease in its price. The average price reductions provide some relief for consumers who rely on garri as a primary food source, particularly in light of the rising costs of living.

This decline in garri prices coincides with a broader trend of decreasing food prices in Nigeria, as reported earlier this month. For instance, rice prices also saw a notable drop across various categories, further indicating a potential easing of food inflation in the market.

As consumers welcome these price reductions, market analysts will be watching closely to see if this trend continues in the coming months, providing much-needed relief to households across the country.
