Ijebu Chief Imam clarifies dress code for mosque worshippers amid concerns
The Chief Imam of Ijebuland has addressed a recent ban on men with braids and tattoos in mosques, emphasizing respect and decorum.

The Chief Imam of Ijebuland, Shaykh Miftaudeen Ayanbadejo, has clarified a recent ban on men with plaited hair, earrings, and tattoos from attending congregational prayers at mosques. This announcement, made during Jumu’ah prayers at the Ijebu Ode Central Mosque on October 9, 2026, aims to uphold the sanctity and dignity of worship within the Islamic community.
Dr. Oyekolade Oyesanya, Head of Corporate Media and Public Communications for the Chief Imam, explained that the initiative is not punitive but rather a reminder of the importance of modest dressing, cleanliness, and proper conduct among worshippers. He emphasized that the directive should not be seen as exclusionary, stating that the mosque is a welcoming place for all Muslims seeking to worship Allah.
Oyesanya noted that the announcement was made on behalf of the Chief Imam-in-Council by Shaykh Abdul Wahab Oleolo. The intention behind the ban is to encourage reflection and adherence to Islamic propriety, particularly regarding attire and behavior in the mosque. He highlighted that concerns had been raised about certain practices, including inappropriate dressing, the wearing of earrings by men, and hairstyles like dreadlocks, which are viewed as contrary to the standards expected in a place of worship.
The Chief Imam's office reiterated that the mosque holds significant spiritual value in Islam, serving as a space for worship, humility, and moral refinement. Oyesanya pointed out that the Qur’an encourages believers to dress appropriately at places of worship, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized cleanliness as a vital aspect of faith.
Furthermore, the use of mobile phones during prayers and sermons was identified as a distraction that could undermine the solemnity of the occasion. The Chief Imam's office urged worshippers to maintain decorum and avoid unnecessary interruptions during religious services.
In his statement, Oyesanya stressed that the goal of the announcement is guidance rather than humiliation, aiming to foster a sense of community and religious consciousness among Muslims. He called on congregants to approach the mosque with respect and to adhere to the established guidelines, which are intended to enhance the worship experience for everyone.
The Chief Imam has appealed to all worshippers to embrace the announcement positively, reminding them that the privilege of worship in the mosque comes with responsibilities. The mosque doors remain open to all Muslims, and the ultimate goal is to cultivate a congregation characterized by faith, humility, and mutual respect, while also providing a space for spiritual growth and moral transformation.
