The death toll from the twin earthquakes in Venezuela has risen to at least 589, as rescuers race to reach survivors before the "golden window" to save people closes.

According to CNN, the second quake was the country's strongest in over a century.

The report, however, states that nearly 3,000 people have been injured, and many more are missing or trapped beneath the rubble.

Residents in Caracas, La Guaira, and the surrounding areas now have nowhere to go after their homes were destroyed, according to the report.

CNN further reports that the US military is on the ground in Venezuela, where special forces carried out a deadly raid to seize then-President Nicolás Maduro.

Relief teams from all over the world are also mobilising assistance, and pledges of foreign aid are pouring in.

Earlier, Tribune Online reported that two powerful earthquakes rattled the coast of Venezuela, killing at least 164 persons, injuring 971 and destroying buildings in the capital on Wednesday evening.

The report states that the earthquakes, a 7.2 magnitude quake followed by a 7.5 magnitude quake in just a few seconds, sent residents racing into the streets.
