The Rivers State Police Command has taken a significant step in addressing a recent incident of alleged murder involving a member of the Onelga Security and Advisory Committee (OSPAC). Felix Dibia, identified as the suspect, was arrested for the shooting death of Francis Chibuzor Ogwu in Omoku, the headquarters of the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area.

The tragic event unfolded on the night of October 1, 2026, when Dibia reportedly confronted Ogwu and another individual along a road. Eyewitness accounts indicate that Dibia ordered both men to sit on the ground. While Ogwu complied, the second individual managed to flee the scene. In a fit of anger, Dibia allegedly shot Ogwu, leading to his death.

Following the shooting, Dibia is said to have hastily buried Ogwu's body in a shallow grave, attempting to conceal the crime. The incident remained undisclosed until community members began to circulate information about the missing man, prompting an investigation.

ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, confirmed the arrest and the recovery of the firearm used in the incident. In a statement released on October 5, Kaborlo emphasized the police's commitment to a thorough investigation, stating, "The Command is aware of the reported killing of one Francis Chibuzor Ogwu in Omoku on October 1, 2026, allegedly involving an OSPAC personnel, Felix Dibia. The suspect has been arrested and the alleged firearm recovered, while investigation is ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident."

Kaborlo further asserted that no member of OSPAC or any individual has the legal right to unlawfully take another person's life, referencing the constitutional guarantee of the right to life under Section 33 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended). The police command has vowed to ensure that due process is followed and that the investigation's outcome will be based strictly on the facts and applicable law.

This incident raises serious concerns regarding the actions of vigilante groups in the region, particularly as OSPAC operates as a community policing initiative aimed at enhancing security in Rivers State. As investigations continue, the local community is left grappling with the implications of this tragic event and the role of vigilante justice in addressing crime.
