AC Milan defender Zachary Athekame has officially committed to representing Switzerland at the international level, following his impressive senior debut in a UEFA Nations League match against North Macedonia. The 21-year-old right-back's appearance in the 3-0 victory on October 3, 2026, has made him cap-tied to Switzerland, eliminating any hopes the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) had of securing his services for the Super Eagles.

Athekame, who is on loan at French club Lyon, showcased his talents during the match by providing assists for both of Zeki Amdouni's goals. His performance not only marked a successful entry into senior international football but also highlighted his potential as a key player for the Swiss national team. Prior to this, he had already made a name for himself in the youth ranks, earning 17 caps for Switzerland's U21 side.

The NFF had been closely monitoring Athekame's progress, given his eligibility to play for Nigeria through his Nigerian father. However, his decision to represent Switzerland comes as a significant blow to Nigeria, which has been attempting to recruit dual-eligible players from Europe. Athekame's cap-tying follows a series of disappointments for the NFF, which has struggled to secure commitments from several other players of Nigerian descent, including Manuel Akanji, Noah Okafor, Simon Sohm, Isaac Schmidt, and Eseosa Aigbogun.

Switzerland's head coach, Murat Yakin, recognized Athekame's potential early in the season, where he had already made a strong impact in Ligue 1, scoring two goals and providing two assists in five appearances. His selection for the senior team marks a significant step up from his previous youth engagements, and his contributions in the match against North Macedonia have solidified his place in the squad.

The result of this match not only kept Switzerland unbeaten in their last eight away internationals but also positioned them at the top of Group B1 in the UEFA Nations League. Athekame's performance is expected to be a catalyst for further opportunities with the Swiss national team.

As Nigeria continues to face challenges in attracting players with Nigerian heritage who have grown up in Europe, the loss of Athekame underscores the stiff competition from European nations for these talents. The NFF's ongoing efforts to strengthen the Super Eagles will need to adapt to this reality, as they seek to build a competitive squad for upcoming international competitions.
